A rheumatologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, particularly disorders that affect the joints, muscles, bones and connective tissues. Rheumatologists are experts in the field of rheumatology, which is a subspecialty of internal medicine.

Rheumatologists undergo extensive training after completing their medical degree, including a residency in internal medicine followed by additional fellowship training specifically in rheumatology. This specialized training equips them with expertise in diagnosing and managing various rheumatic diseases.

Rheumatologists diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, vasculitis and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system.

Rheumatologists use a variety of tools to diagnose rheumatic diseases, including a detailed medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans. They may also perform joint aspirations or biopsies in some cases.

Rheumatologists develop individualized treatment plans based on the specific condition and needs of each patient. Treatment may include medications such as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, biologic agents and other medications as appropriate. They may also provide recommendations for lifestyle changes, physical therapy, occupational therapy and other interventions to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Rheumatologists often work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists and other specialists, to provide comprehensive care for patients with rheumatic conditions.

Many rheumatic conditions are chronic, requiring ongoing management and monitoring. Rheumatologists provide long-term care, including regular follow-up visits, monitoring of disease activity, adjustment of treatment plans as needed, and management of potential complications or comorbidities associated with rheumatic diseases.

Gout is form of arthritis that is caused by the accumulation of urate crystals in joints, leading to sudden and severe pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness in the affected joint.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes pain and swelling of the joints. The normal role of your body’s immune system is to fight off infections to keep you healthy.
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a condition that mainly affects the spine. The joints of the neck, back and pelvis become inflamed, causing pain and stiffness. The sacroiliac joints are commonly affected in AS.
Psoriatic arthritis can cause swelling, stiffness and pain in and around the joints, cause nail changes and overall fatigue.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (also called SLE or lupus) is an autoimmune condition. The normal role of your body’s immune system is to fight off infections and diseases to keep you healthy.
Osteoporosis is common disease affecting over 1 million Australians. This disease makes bones become brittle leading to a higher risk of breaks than in normal bone.
Myositis refers to any condition causing inflammation in muscles. Weakness, swelling, and pain are the most common myositis symptoms. Myositis causes include infection, injury, autoimmune conditions, and drug side effects.
Polymyalgia rheumatica means ‘pain in many muscles’. It is a condition that causes inflammation of the joints and tissues around the joints. This causes muscles to feel painful and stiff, especially in the shoulder, neck and hip areas.
Vasculitis involves inflammation of the blood vessels. The inflammation can cause the walls of the blood vessels to thicken, which reduces the width of the passageway through the vessel. If blood flow is restricted, it can result in organ and tissue damage.
